At New Leaf Farms, we work with horses to teach social-emotional skills and concepts for children and adults. Through a partnership with horses, clients learn to identify and manage their feelings and reactions in a safe and effective manner. Horses provide an excellent reflection of our behaviours without judgement or bias. Professional coaching by our facilitators guides clients toward healthier, more effective coping mechanisms and reactions.
Some of the diagnoses of our clients include:
• Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
• Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
• Generalize Anxiety Disorder
• Major Depressive Disorder
• Learning Disabilities
• Bi-Polar Disorder
• Autism Spectrum
• Speech Challenges
• Oppositional Defiance Disorder
• Eating Disorders
• Addictions
• Self-harm
Equine Assisted Development includes various activities shaped around social-emotional learning goals. Clients will learn how to handle the horses, explore horse behaviour, and learn to recognize and understand horse communication. These activities are professionally facilitated to adapt to the client’s specific needs, strengths, and personality. Learning is presented in many forms, to best maintain the client’s interest and engagement.
Examples of Activities:
· Groundwork
· Trick-training
· Games and obstacles
· Riding skills
· Grooming
· Stretching and breathing exercises
· Anatomy and health
· Horse communication
Our equine partners are varied in their skills and experience, just like our clients. They all have lessons to teach. Some horses are stoic and professional, instilling confidence and security. Some are goofy and challenging and require increased focus and patience. Clients will work with specific horses depending on the learning goals of that session.
Learning Goals:
· Boundaries
· Appropriate Assertiveness
· Confidence
· Empathy
· Self-Regulation
· Focus and Attention Maintenance
· Communication Methods
· Teamwork
· Planning and Execution of Plans
Located just outside of beautiful Caledonia, our farm is a welcoming, relaxing change from traditional program settings. Sessions are private, with no visitors or other distractions, allowing for clients to relax and focus. Our horses are friendly and gentle regardless of previous experience. Clients will get to know all of our horses and personable goats during their visits. Our clowder of barn cats provide cuddles and affection as permitted by visitors.
Lessons take place in our barn and attached indoor arena. There is a viewing area for spectators, but we encourage guardians slowly remove themselves as client comfort increases. This results in increased feelings of confidence and focus for our clients.
Sessions are 45 minutes in length and are offered in a private setting. And we mean private- there will be no one else at the farm during sessions to ensure privacy and a safe space.
Private Sessions: 45-minute sessions are $320/ package of 4. 60-minute sessions are $360/ package of 4.
*Equine Assisted Development is not traditionally covered by insurance plans. Please check with your provider. We are registered service providers for such programs as Jordan's Principle, SSAH and other child development and welfare funding programs.
