New Leaf Farms was founded in 2017 by Melissa Hillier. After struggling for years to parent her neurodiverse son while working a demanding full-time job, Melissa had to make the decision to leave the world of social services behind to focus solely on her son's needs. One main problem was that there was no safe space for her son to just be himself. Soccer was a bust, karate too structured, school was a nightmare and even family events could be overwhelming. He needed a space to be unapologetically himself. Melissa owned one horses at the time, and thought heck, let's get some more! She took courses in equine assisted learning, and along with her 15 years of social service sector experience created a unique business that supports and encourages clients to feel safe and accepted regardless of age, gender identity, neurotype or mental/ physical ability.
New Leaf Farms is born of dream that everyone should feel safe, welcome and respected while pursuing learning and healing with horses. The team welcomes all ages, genders, abilities and backgrounds to come and experience the healing environment here.
Do you identify as a bit of a mess sometimes? This is the place for you! New Leaf Farms is full of perfect imperfection. Horses who can't carry a rider, a goat with only one horn, a hen with rooster tendencies... there is value and worth in all the things that make make you different. New Leaf Farms welcomes you as you are, not as your should be.
You will find that the teaching shared at New Leaf Farms encompasses many modalities. Music and somatic movement are mixed with social skill enhancement and self-regulation skills. Energy work is a part of our curriculum as well. Focus is placed on mind, spirit and body.

Melissa Hillier is the owner and operator of New Leaf Farms. Founded in 2017, she created New Leaf Farms to offer a safe and accepting space for children and adults to explore and learn about themselves through interaction with animals.
Melissa spent the first 15 years of her career working with women and children escaping domestic violence. She left her job after the needs of her son became more than could be addressed while working 40 hour weeks. While seeking services to support her son who is diagnosed with ADHD and ASD, Melissa saw a need for spaces where he could openly be himself. She decided to create a space for him and others like him. A safe place to openly stim, ask a thousand questions and connect deeply with all sorts of animals. A place to feel safe, accepted and encouraged.
Melissa's son is now a young adult, but her passion for working with children continues. She also enjoys empowering women and those who identify as neurodiverse. Melissa is proudly neurodiverse herself and embraces all the amazing attributes that brings to the table.

Spirit is our heard leader and mom of the barn. She is 21 years old. She came to us in 2017 after being rehomed several times in 2 years. The trauma she went through was challenging to overcome, but with time, patience and consistency she has thrived.
Spirit is a kind and sweet horse, with an iron will. She will test you to your limits, but only in the spirit of helping her handlers grow.

Jamie is our 12 year old curly horse. He will distract you with his long curly lashes and then search you for treats. He is a funny and somewhat stubborn horse. He definitely demands a lot of attention and consistency when working with him, but he will happily show you all of his tricks for a few scratches.

Jamieès history is a bit unknown, but we do know he suffered an injury early in his life that has left him with some physical limitations that making being ridden uncomfortable. For that reason, Jamie is a groundwork only horse.

His bravery in unmatched. When he was still riding, there was nothing Andis wouldn't do for his rider. He was the leader of the herd until he stepped down to allow Spirit to reign.
At age 27+, Andis is now retired from riding. He still greatly enjoys working with clients and showing off his trick skills. He is incredibly loving, and can make any day feel better in just a few minutes of being in his company.

Despite her efforts to serve as a broodmare, trail horse, and pleasure horse, she was often deemed "not quite good enough." We are thrilled to welcome this kind and gentle mare into our family, as we believe in the potential of animal therapy, especially for individuals with Autism and ADHD. Arty is still adjusting to her new environment and can hardly believe she will stay with us forever. She is currently addressing some hoof and back issues, and we hope to have her comfortable enough to engage in equine therapy sessions, contributing to our mission at New Leaf Farms to support neurodiversity.

We are excited to be part of his journey and help him discover his true potential through equine therapy.

This beautiful mare, Elora, came to us from the Mennonite community. She arrived with road shoes and harness sores from her hard work as a family's main form of transportation. At about 10 years old, Elora has been given a few months of downtime to adjust to her new life as a therapy horse, specifically in the realm of animal therapy. During this time, her body is slowly healing, and her heart is opening up to the love of humans. Elora is a very strong-willed, smart horse who presents a challenge for those working with her. She demands respect and commitment from her handlers, but in the right hands, she becomes an amazing partner, especially for individuals seeking support for Autism and ADHD through equine therapy. At New Leaf Farms, we believe in the power of neurodiversity and the unique bond that can be formed through this therapeutic process.

Veya came to our family for a year in 2020 after completing a short racing career. She was trained at our farm and went off to start showing. Three years later, Veya suffered a back injury while competing and had to be retired. She happily returned to us. Being a little busy-minded, Veya needed a special home with lots of outside time, friends, and patience. We were delighted to bring her back home and rehab her injury. Veya truly embodies neurodiversity, as she exhibits symptoms often associated with Autism and ADHD. We love her unique personality! She's always fun and a great partner for learning, making her a wonderful addition to our animal therapy programs.

Despite his size, Zach is a sensitive soul who thrives on quiet conversations and enjoys being brushed. He came to us as a gift from his previous owner, who faced unexpected challenges and wanted to ensure her longtime pet found a safe, loving home. We were more than happy to oblige! Zach has a friendly disposition and gets along with every horse in the herd, showing remarkable patience even with the cheeky Chance. His calming presence makes him an ideal companion for those benefiting from equine therapy, particularly for individuals with Autism and ADHD, reinforcing the importance of neurodiversity in our therapeutic practices.

As a cuddlebug, he’s a joy to be around, especially for those exploring neurodiversity, including Autism and ADHD. Just be cautious of those teeth!

Griffin arrived at New Leaf Farms having missed out on an average horse experience. He has often stabled, only let outside by himself and did not really have any friends. It was a tough first few months here, but Griffin has thrived. He now loves to play and explore the property with the herd. He loves wrestling with the other geldings. Through it all, he remains the sweetest, most cuddly giant around!

Ronan (black and white) is a busy and impulsive boy. He loves adventuring to the arena to try our obstacles. He enjoys meeting new people and demanding scratches.
Rupert (brown) is a more sensitive soul. He is very attached to Melissa, and can usually be found by her ankles. Rupert is also a screamer when he feels lonely, hungry or generally unhappy. If you think you hear a goose is meeting its end, that is probably Rupert!

Barbara is our elder goat and farm nanny. She can be found interrupting horse lessons by gently leaning on clients, asking for cuddles. She is incredibly sweet and kind.
Barbara has taken on the job of guiding Rupert and Ronan to be well behaved boys. Its a big job! She loves to wrestle them, teaching them to be gentle with their little horns and respecting space.

Our chicken crew consists of 6 hens who all live quite well together. They free-range outdoors through the warmer months. They also give us eggs every day- so generous!
Though our chickens are quietly curious of humans, they do not like to be touched. We ask that all visitors refrain from chasing them and causing them stress.

Alfie watches over his little pride to ensure all the cats are getting along, especially for those involved in programs supporting neurodiversity, including Autism and ADHD. His brother, Ryan, is a brown tabby who can be shy or outgoing, depending on the day. Our kitten crew, now young adults, includes Temu, Jeffrey, Chloe, and Sugar. They are always up for snuggles and compliments, though they definitely bring the crazy when the mood hits, adding to the joy of our equine therapy sessions.
